Electrical Purchasing Manager Opportunity

An Electrical Purchasing Manager is sought for the Detroit, MI market. This role leads purchasing and material procurement for electrical construction projects, ensuring field and project teams receive the correct materials, equipment, tools, rentals, and supplies at competitive costs and within required project schedules. The Purchasing Manager works closely with project managers, estimators, field leadership, warehouse personnel, accounting, suppliers, and manufacturers to improve purchasing efficiency, control costs, manage lead times, and support successful project execution.

Experience

3+ years of purchasing, procurement, material management, supply chain, or related construction experience is preferred. Electrical contracting or electrical construction purchasing experience is strongly preferred. Candidates should understand common electrical materials and equipment, purchase orders, vendor quotations, jobsite delivery requirements, inventory practices, project schedules, and the importance of material availability to field productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Manage purchasing and procurement of electrical materials, equipment, tools, rentals, and project supplies.
  • Process field and project material requests and determine the most effective source, pricing, and delivery method.
  • Prepare and issue requests for quotation and purchase orders accurately and on schedule.
  • Solicit, compare, and evaluate supplier quotations for price, availability, lead time, freight, terms, and scope compliance.
  • Negotiate pricing, commercial terms, delivery commitments, and purchasing agreements with suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with electrical distributors, manufacturers, rental companies, and specialty suppliers.
  • Coordinate purchasing requirements with project managers, estimators, field supervisors, warehouse personnel, and accounting.
  • Track long-lead electrical equipment and critical materials to reduce the risk of project delays.
  • Monitor purchase orders from release through delivery and resolve shortages, damaged materials, pricing discrepancies, backorders, and delivery problems.
  • Coordinate jobsite deliveries, equipment rentals, pickups, returns, credits, and material transfers.
  • Support procurement of switchgear, transformers, lighting, wire and cable, conduit, fittings, devices, controls, distribution equipment, and other electrical construction materials.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records, supplier information, pricing history, order status, and procurement documentation.
  • Coordinate invoice and purchase-order discrepancies with accounting and suppliers.
  • Support warehouse and inventory management, including stock levels, replenishment, min/max quantities, cycle counts, and material organization.
  • Identify alternate materials, suppliers, and purchasing strategies that reduce cost while maintaining project requirements and quality.
  • Monitor market conditions, material escalation, availability, and supply-chain risks that may affect active and upcoming projects.
  • Help standardize purchasing procedures, preferred vendors, material selections, and procurement workflows.
  • Measure and improve supplier performance related to pricing, quality, responsiveness, and on-time delivery.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of purchasing, procurement, supply chain, material management, or related construction experience preferred.
  • Electrical contractor, electrical distributor, or electrical construction purchasing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical construction materials, tools, equipment, and common supplier channels.
  • Ability to understand project drawings, specifications, submittals, bills of material, and purchasing requirements.
  • Strong vendor negotiation, relationship management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to compare quotations and evaluate total cost, lead time, freight, terms, availability, and project requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, purchase orders, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Experience with inventory, warehouse coordination, jobsite logistics, returns, credits, and material tracking is beneficial.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and purchasing or construction management software.
  • Experience with ERP, accounting, procurement, or contractor purchasing systems is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, cost awareness, follow-through, and commitment to supporting field productivity.
  • College, technical, construction-management, supply-chain, business, or equivalent industry education is beneficial but not required when supported by relevant experience.
