Google-Backed West Virginia Project Combines Solar With Two Battery Technologies

MN8, Google and Eos announced a West Virginia project combining 86 MW of solar with lithium-ion and long-duration zinc battery storage.

MN8 Energy, Google and Eos Energy Enterprises announced a West Virginia energy project combining utility-scale solar with two different battery-storage technologies to support growing electricity demand on the PJM grid.

The MN8-owned project includes 86 MW of solar generation, 70 MW/280 MWh of lithium-ion battery storage and 10 MW/100 MWh of Eos zinc-based long-duration storage.

The project will be built on a reclaimed coal mine in West Virginia. MN8 estimates total capital investment of up to $350 million and approximately 200 construction jobs.

Google is participating as electricity demand from data centers continues to rise across the PJM region. Combining solar with short- and long-duration storage allows electricity generated during daylight hours to be shifted into other periods.

The electrical construction scope includes solar collection systems, inverters, battery systems, transformers, switchgear, protection, controls and grid-interconnection facilities.

MN8 says the project could generate approximately $4 million in property-tax revenue for the county and local schools during its first 20 years. The project details were confirmed by both MN8 and Eos.
