Electrical Contractor Business Development Manager Opportunity
A Business Development Manager is sought for an electrical contractor serving the Columbus, OH market. This position is responsible for developing new commercial electrical construction opportunities, expanding relationships with existing clients, identifying upcoming projects, and helping build a strong pipeline of negotiated, design-build, design-assist, service, and competitively bid work. The Business Development Manager works closely with company leadership, estimating, preconstruction, operations, and project management to pursue opportunities that align with the contractor’s capabilities and growth strategy.
Experience
5+ years of business development, sales, account management, preconstruction, estimating, project management, or related construction experience is preferred. Electrical contracting or commercial construction experience is strongly preferred. Candidates should understand how electrical construction projects are developed, funded, designed, bid, negotiated, awarded, and delivered, and should be comfortable building long-term relationships with general contractors, construction managers, developers, owners, engineers, architects, and other industry decision-makers.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute business development strategies for commercial electrical construction and related services.
- Identify upcoming construction projects, target accounts, new clients, and market opportunities that fit company capabilities.
- Build relationships with general contractors, construction managers, owners, developers, engineers, architects, facility managers, and other decision-makers.
- Develop opportunities for negotiated, design-build, design-assist, preconstruction, service, maintenance, and competitively bid electrical work.
- Maintain regular contact with existing clients and identify opportunities for repeat business and expanded services.
- Research local construction activity, capital programs, major developments, public projects, private projects, and emerging market sectors.
- Qualify prospective opportunities based on client, project type, schedule, geography, competition, risk, profitability, and strategic fit.
- Coordinate closely with estimating and preconstruction teams when new opportunities move into budgeting, conceptual estimating, design-assist, or formal bidding.
- Support proposal strategy, presentations, interviews, qualifications packages, and client meetings.
- Work with operations and project management teams to ensure commitments made during business development can be successfully delivered.
- Maintain an accurate pipeline of prospects, opportunities, pursuits, proposals, and expected awards.
- Track client activity, project intelligence, follow-up dates, relationships, and opportunity status using CRM or company systems.
- Attend construction industry meetings, association events, networking functions, conferences, and client events.
- Represent the electrical contractor professionally in the local construction market and strengthen company visibility and reputation.
- Develop relationships with strategic partners, suppliers, manufacturers, subcontractors, and industry organizations where appropriate.
- Monitor competitors, market conditions, construction trends, and customer needs to identify new growth opportunities.
- Help develop annual sales and business development goals, forecasts, account plans, and market strategies.
- Provide leadership with regular updates on pipeline activity, major pursuits, client relationships, market intelligence, and potential awards.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of business development, sales, account management, estimating, preconstruction, project management, or related construction experience preferred.
- Electrical contracting, electrical construction, MEP, or commercial construction industry experience is strongly preferred.
- Established knowledge of the commercial construction sales cycle and how projects progress from early planning through bidding and award.
- Ability to develop relationships with general contractors, construction managers, developers, owners, engineers, architects, and facility decision-makers.
- Understanding of electrical estimating, preconstruction, design-build, design-assist, negotiated work, and competitive bidding is beneficial.
- Strong prospecting, networking, presentation, negotiation, communication, and relationship-management skills.
- Ability to identify, qualify, prioritize, and pursue opportunities that match company resources and profitability goals.
- Strong written communication skills for proposals, correspondence, presentations, and client follow-up.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with estimating, operations, project management, and executive leadership.
- Experience with CRM software, Microsoft Office, and construction-industry databases or project intelligence platforms is preferred.
- Strong organizational and follow-through skills with the ability to manage multiple relationships and opportunities simultaneously.
- College degree in business, construction management, engineering, marketing, or a related discipline is beneficial but may be substituted with relevant electrical construction experience.
